The Indo-American “Cyriac Kappil” Pro Bono Legal Clinic (“IAC” Clinic) is a monthly community service supported and staffed by attorneys through the Indian American Bar Association (IABA) of Chicago. The clinic was established through a donation by Ms. Valsa Kappil to the Indo-American Center (IAC) of Chicago in recognition of her late husband, an outstanding and dedicated member of the legal community.
The clinic located near Devon Avenue at: 6326 North California Avenue; Chicago, IL 60659
Upon the invitation of the IAC, IABA began sending volunteers to this clinic approximately 10 years ago and has maintained its commitment to this important monthly resource for members of our community ever since. Income-eligible members of the community attending this clinic receive free legal advice on topics ranging from immigration and public benefits to family and employment law in languages such as Hindi, Gujarati, and Bengali. Hundreds of clients have been served through this clinic.
Highlights of IABA’s achievements with respect to this clinic include:
- Receiving a commitment from Chicago Volunteer Legal Services to provide malpractice coverage and support for this monthly clinic
- Signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the IAC in 2009 for the clinic’s continued success
- Receiving funding from the NASABA Foundation in 2010 for the clinic
- Establishing the IABA Chicago Foundation in 2011 to enable tax-exempt donations to the clinic
Law students, recent graduates, newly-licensed attorneys, and attorneys experienced in any practice area are all welcome to volunteer their services to the IAC clinic.
