IABA-Chicago’s women’s committee will be hosting its first roundtable discussion on breaking into the Chicago legal market. Join us as Seema Masterson, a recruiter at VOYlegal llc, shares invaluable tips and advice on what employers are looking for and how to find a job in today’s legal landscape.

IABA-Chicago Beach Volleyball – Team Vollywood!!!!

We are happy to announce that we have an IABA beach volleyball team for the summer! The format will be 6 on 6 co-ed (recreational skill level). It will be every Thursday and game times will be either 6pm, 6:45 or 7:30 pm at Oak Street Beach. If you would like to play, please email Sachin Shah at spshah2@gmail.com. The first 12 people (WE NEED MEN AND WOMEN) to email Sachin are in. Cost is $20 per person and you MUST Be an IABA-Chicago paid member. Our first game will be next Thursday, June 13th, time TBA. Panel Discussion on Immigration Reform – Updated Date

Venue: DePaul Law School (25 E. Jackson), Lewis Building, Room 241

The national conversation in recent months has been dominated by comprehensive immigration reform (CIR). What does CIR mean for the Asian-American community? How would CIR affect the continuing immigration to the United States of South Asians who have been heavy and traditional users of employment visas, H-1Bs, and family visas?

Come learn about all this and more at an upcoming interactive panel at DePaul Law School. Speakers will include:

1) Ami Gandhi, Executive Director of SAAPRI (South Asian American Policy and Research Institute)

2) Andy Kang, Legal Director at Advancing Justice Chicago

3) Professor Sioban Albiol, DePaul Law School (Professor of Imm. Law and Policy, and Asylum/Immigration Law Clinic)

4) Tejas Shah, Associate Attorney at Kriezelman Burton and Associates

The panel will be moderated by Rishi Agrawal.

A question and answer session will follow the panel discussion.

IABA-Chicago 2013 Public Interest Fellowship – Application Due May 20, 2013

The IABA-Chicago Fellowship provides a $1,500 grant to a law school student who works in an unpaid or low-paid summer position benefiting the public interest. Work benefiting the South Asian community is preferable but not required. All 1L and 2L law students are urged to submit an application. The application should take less than one hour to complete. Additionally, to promote the grant recipient’s exposure to public interest law, the selected applicant must commit to volunteering at least 6 hours total between June to December of 2013 in support of IABA-Chicago’s pro bono activities, including the Cyriac Kappil Clinic, as the IABA-Chicago Summer Intern. Applications are available for download here.

All applications must be submitted to the IABA-Chicago by midnight on May 20, 2013.

IABA-Chicago announces formation of Women’s Committee

IABA-Chicago is proud to announce the formation of its Women’s Committee. The Women’s Committee aims to connect South-Asian female attorneys and provide a forum where individuals can share best practices and candidly discuss professional concerns through a round-table format.

We are proud to announce our inaugural event on Wednesday, May 1st. IABA has partners with the Women’s Bar of Illinois, CBA Alliance for Women, CBA Committee on Ethnic and Racial Diversity, and the Decalogue Society to put together an engaging panel discussion titled Understanding and Managing Unconscious Bias: Strategies for Success. The event will be followed by a Cocktail Reception where Judge Rena Van Tine will be honored by IABA as the first female South-Asian Judge in the United States. Additional event details are below.
